A resource for parents of children with emotional and behavioral problems.
ADD, ADHD, ODD, cutting . . . Emotional or behavioral disorders can make the normally trying teenage years almost unbearable. Not only for the teenager, but for family, friends, teachers and classmates. Unfortunately, more and more teens today struggle with learning disabilities, depression, mood swings, obesity and eating disorders, trouble with peers, and other difficulties that make it hard to function like normal teens in school or at home. Whether they’re angry, depressed, or defiant, these kids can make life miserable for themselves and everyone around them.
The good news is that parents have a growing number of options for coping with struggling teens—from family counseling to therapeutic programs to emotional growth schools, which focus on behavioral change and character development. Some, like The Family Foundation School, incorporate the principles of 12 steps as a model for responsible living. The school’s founders have practiced the principles since their days at the Marble Hill A.A. meetings in the Bronx in the 1960s. They and their children, who today operate The Family Foundation School, have used the steps to guide hundreds of troubled teens to responsible adulthood.
About The Family Foundation School
The Family Foundation School, Hancock, New York, is a coed, college preparatory boarding school for at-risk teens. The school is registered by the New York State Board of Regents and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
The mission of The Family Foundation School is to guide students through the difficulties of their teenage years toward responsible adulthood. Our students have disobeyed rules and defied parents. Many are in academic trouble; some have legal issues or are on probation; others suffer from ADD, ADHD, ODD (oppositional defiance disorder), self mutilation (cutting), eating disorders (obesity, anorexia, bulimia), and more.
We believe that a strong personal value system is necessary for building and maintaining a responsible, moral, and mature lifestyle, and we instill these values in our students by fully integrating the spiritual, psychological, and academic aspects of life at the school. Our students learn and benefit from the spiritual principles of the 12 steps; individual, group and family counseling; and an academic program that features both a challenging curriculum and small class sizes to encourage individual learning.
The Family Foundation School is owned and operated by Education Plus Corporation, and affiliated with Betton House, LLC in Scranton, Pennsylvania, a new alternative/wellness dorm for college students, 18 to 24, looking for support in making the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
